Breastfeeding medicine consults at The Village provide physician-level evaluation and treatment when breastfeeding challenges involve medical contributors.
These visits are referral-based and designed to support families who are already working with a lactation consultant or who have been advised to seek medical evaluation by a healthcare provider.
Breastfeeding and lactation medicine is a physician-led medical subspecialty focused on the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of conditions that affect breastfeeding and human milk feeding for both parent and baby. It addresses the physiological, medical, and psychosocial factors that influence lactation, particularly when feeding challenges involve underlying health conditions, persistent symptoms, or require medical decision-making.
While lactation consultants provide essential education, latch support, and feeding guidance, breastfeeding medicine is designed for situations where medical assessment or treatment is needed. This includes diagnosing and managing medical causes of low or excess milk supply, persistent pain, infections or inflammation, medication considerations, hormonal or endocrine conditions, and infant medical factors affecting feeding. Care is centered on the breastfeeding dyad and integrates medical expertise with collaborative support to help families reach safe, sustainable feeding goals.
