What Makes Direct Primary Care Different From a Traditional Clinic

September 10, 2026

About Me

I'm Dr. Berry. Board-certified family medicine physician and breastfeeding medicine specialist.

Meet Dr. Berry

What actually makes a direct primary care (DPC) practice different from the clinic down the road? The differences run deeper than just the billing model, and they shape almost everything about how care feels day to day.

Patient Panel Size

A traditional family medicine physician often carries a panel of well over two thousand patients. At The Village, I intentionally cap my practice at fifty families. That single decision is what makes everything else possible, since it is simply not possible to offer unhurried, personalized care to thousands of people at once.

Visit Length

Traditional clinics are often built around fifteen minute visits, largely because of how insurance billing incentivizes volume. In a micropractice, visits typically run thirty to sixty minutes, which leaves room to actually talk through concerns instead of rushing to the next patient in the waiting room.

How You Reach Your Doctor

In a traditional practice, reaching your doctor between visits often means a phone tree, a message routed through office staff, and a callback sometime later in the day, if at all. As a member of a DPC clinic, you can message your physician directly and expect a response the same or next business day for acute concerns.

No Insurance Billing

A direct primary care practice does not bill insurance for primary care at all. Instead, members pay a flat monthly fee that covers your everyday primary care needs. This removes a significant amount of overhead and administrative complexity, and it means your care is not shaped by what an insurance company will or will not reimburse.

A Genuine Relationship Over Time

Perhaps the biggest difference is continuity. In my practice, you see the same physician visit after visit, year after year, rather than whichever provider happens to be available. Over time that relationship becomes part of what makes the care itself better, since I actually know your history, your family, and your specific concerns.

If this kind of care sounds like what you have been looking for and you are near Stephens City, Middletown, or Boyce, I would love to talk with you at a complimentary Meet and Greet.
